Seeds of Change WINNER

Fruitmarket

Proposed Initiative: Future Makers, a mentoring programme investing in the future of eco-conscious making, selling and buying.

Future Makers will support 10 local makers over 12 months to create bespoke products that are ethically and sustainably produced – promoting the development of community-minded commercial practices, while generating a new and innovative income stream. The final products will be unveiled in an exhibition and product launch event at Fruitmarket.

The project aims to support local makers and graduates, creating workable templates to help them understand how to scale up a wholesale business with sustainable goals in mind, and considering all elements of the production process such as the use of innovative new materials. The focus will always be regional, investing in local and emerging designer makers to make meaningful connections with local communities.

The judges were impressed by the creativity of this project, and can easily see how the model could be applied to other member venues to help them build up and invest in local artists and makers, as well as educate their audiences about eco-consciousness and the importance of shopping local. A well thought out project that develops local makers into suppliers for the sector while encouraging sustainable practices. Creatively exciting and right for right now.
