Art Cards Ireland
Our involvement with cards began during the nearly 20 years we spent living in Ireland. Exploring the high streets of Dublin, we noticed that cards by Irish artists were hard to find. Having worked in publishing, and having an interest in all things arty crafty, the idea of publishing cards by Irish artists was born.
We started off small at local markets. Today we have stockists across Ireland and the UK. Our cards are colourful and mostly feature work by mid-career artists and illustrators – professionals whose skill is very evident.
People sometimes express polite surprise that any kind of money can be made from cards, maybe thinking it’s all about e-cards, Facebook and Instagram these days. Not so. 18-34 year olds are sending more cards than a generation ago, both here and in the US. One in six retailers sells cards, and British people send more cards per head of population than any other nation – amounting to not far short of £2 billion per year. This provides income for artists, writers, publishers, printers, retailers and many others.
The UK and Ireland are very intertwined, with one in six UK families having some kind of Irish connection. When we started, most of our stockists were in Ireland; now we are growing fast in the UK, and are delighted to be able to showcase Irish art and illustration beyond Irish shores.
