Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration

We’re the UK’s first and only charity for illustration.

Budget: estimated £120,000 (ex. VAT)
Contract: August 2025 – March 2026
Apply by: Thursday 05 June 5:00pm BST

In Spring 2026 we will open the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration, a vibrant and welcoming new cultural centre, with visual storytelling at its heart. We are establishing a permanent home at New River Head, an 18th and 19th century waterworks in London’s Clerkenwell. Atmospheric and steeped in stories, its long-abandoned Engine House, windmill and cobbled courtyards will become galleries, learning spaces and gardens.

We were founded by one of the UK’s best-loved illustrators and we will show highlights from Quentin Blake’s remarkable 70-year archive, offering unique insights into illustration, storytelling and publishing. We will explore how illustration has shaped our world through a wide range of exhibitions featuring rarely-seen original artworks, posters and artefacts from important international museum and private collections.

Base build construction began on site in Autumn 2024 and we are now inviting tenders for the fabrication and install of showcases and furniture across four gallery spaces. We are seeking a contractor with experience fitting out permanent display spaces in museums and galleries.

We are looking for:

  • demonstrable experience of fabricating and installing robust and long-lasting exhibition setworks in museums and/or galleries.
  • demonstrable experience of collaborating with project teams including designers, curators and other contractors.
  • experience working with a range of materials and finishes and understanding of those specified in the design (including any pros and cons).
  • evidence of a practical commitment to sustainability.
  • evidence of commitment to our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion values.
